River Camping

We've been wanting to go camping for a while now and the weather keeps getting hotter. This weekend was pretty much our last chance for decent weather for the next while. We had talked about going camping at Guadalupe River State park, because we've been there and it's relatively close by. The kids were going to have soccer games on Saturday, so we'd have to pack up and leave early in the morning. However, since all games were cancelled (see previous post), Nate really wanted to go to Pedernales Falls State Park. So we ended up taking the longer drive on Friday afternoon and had a scare because of the 'all campsites full' sign at the entrance. Lucky for us though there had been some cancellations and we got a great spot, set up camp, had dinner and went swimming in the river. OK, so the kids swam and we waded. It was gorgeous, there were Cypress trees all along the river and it was so green and the water was nice and cool, but not at all cold. It was like paradise. The camera battery died at this point, so we only have a few pictures.

What is more fun than running around in a river?

Annika and Luke enjoyed themselves at a slightly slower pace.

We slept comfortably on air mattresses at night (way better than the rocky ground) and even Luke did pretty well. We didn't have too much trouble with mosquitoes and the bathrooms were pretty close. Saturday morning we went to the bird blind and saw lots of different finches, cardinals, a titmouse, a cow bird and even some hummingbirds. Then we went to the falls and they were really cool. There were some wonderful pools beneath them that looked inviting, but swimming was not allowed. It was getting hot already, so we ended our trip at the river. We ended up at a little sandy beach and left as it started to get busy. We had a great time!
