How do you get your child to eat his dinner?

Last night, Ian pulled his usual trick at dinner time. He is definitely my most picky eater and if we eat something he doesn't like, he turns his plate upside down and plainly refuses to eat any of it. He wants leftovers. We've been putting in a lot of effort to get him to try at least a few bites, but it's not an easy thing. We've tried many different strategies. This time, Nate told him the story about the pioneers in a handcart company, traveling to Utah. For some time all they had to eat was a little cup of flour for each person. He made an object lesson out of it and brought a cup of flour to the table for Ian to try and compare. For a while it looked like Ian preferred the cup of flour. We ended up bribing him to eat half of his pasta and gave him a cookie after that. I just had to take a picture of him and the flour and his classic 'I'm so not happy with this' face.

During Family Home Evening, Ian started to rub my ever growing belly. He asked: "Is that big, fat thing on your belly my baby brother?" He just makes me laugh.

What a funny picture! (At least he'll think it's funny when he's older ;o)

Growing up, my dad always insisted that everyone have a "courtesy bite" of everything. But we still could only choose from food at the table. It's so tough because you want your kids to eat so they'll grow and be healthy, yet you don't want to fight about it. I so feel for you and like your ideas.

We also have a non-eater (my son Adam), and haven't found answers yet. Good luck!!
