And what animals did we see???

Last Friday was a student holiday for Kaelyn. It was a beautiful day and we went to the San Antonio Zoo with my wonderful friend Mylene and her kids (Maya and Nilo). We hadn't seen them since before Christmas because we kept taking turns being sick or having sick kids). We had a great time. It was incredibly busy, but we still got to do a lot. We started at the toddler play place where the sandbox was the first hit. Maya and Kaelyn were soon busy building a Fairy house (inspired by Fairy Houses). Upon finishing, Kaelyn found an injured, ugly insect on the ground. It was fascinating and pretty soon all kids were gathered around it, trying to make it move. It was missing 1 1/2 legs.
Inside the toddler play place, the kids caught some magnetic fish in a small stream. It's one of Ian's favorite zoo activities, because he can actually catch something! Annika had a blast in the tunnels by the prairy dog display. She can actually stand up and walk through them!
We took a 'break' on a grass field that had collected some water in the middle and looked a little swampy. There are little hills and toys for the kids to play on. Some kids figured out that the red stairs, turned upside down, were really a boat and they put one in the middle of the puddle with a stair bridge next to it. Ian decided that was where he was going to play. Soon Annika and everyone else joined and they got just a little muddy. At one point, Annika tried to get out and pretty much fell into the muddy puddle.
On the way back, we went to Africa Life and saw the hippos and a Nile croc. Then we saw a school group stampede behid us and got out of there as fast as we could. We walked by the elephant, lions, tiger, kangaroos and down to Lori Landing. Ian loves to feed the Lorikeets. They will sometimes come sit on your arm, shoulder or head. Mylene bought some nectar for each of the kids and they had a tough time with those overfed birds. We had to be careful, because the birds kept squirting allover the place. I got hit on the arm.

Finally, Mylene had to leave and Kaelyn and Ian really wanted to go swim at the river bank, so we said goodbye and went to the little beach. Annika was so tired, she fell asleep on the way there. Kaelyn and Ian had a blast running around in the water until it was time to go home. Unfortunately, Annika woke up as they were getting dressed and I was all out of milk. She threw a huge fit, screaming all the way back to the van. For more pictures of our outing, click here.
